## Summary

A standard Japanese Pokemon booster box holds 30 packs of 5 cards, so 150 cards, as of October 2026. Some sets use other formats: Pokemon Card 151 has 20 packs of 7 cards, 30th Celebration has 20 packs of 6 cards, and High Class boxes have 10 packs of 10 cards. Since May 2026 a standard pack costs ¥200, which makes the box ¥6,000 (about $38). The set name does not tell you the format, so check the pack count on the listing.

## Key facts

- Standard box: 30 packs x 5 cards = 150 cards
- Box MSRP: ¥6,000 since May 2026 (¥5,400 before)
- 151 box: 20 packs x 7 cards = 140 cards
- Carton: 12 boxes (Folio; not official)

A standard Japanese Pokemon booster box holds **30 packs of 5 cards, so 150 cards**, as of October 2026. Since May 2026 a pack lists at ¥200, which puts the box at ¥6,000 (about $38 at ¥157 to the dollar). Not every box follows that format: the Pokemon Card 151 box has 20 packs, the 30th Celebration box has 20 packs, and High Class boxes have 10.

## What are the Japanese box formats?

The Pokemon Company's own product pages give the pack price and the cards per pack. The pack count per box comes from retailers and hobby guides such as Folio, and we checked it against several of them. Here is the 2026 picture:

| Box type | Packs | Cards per pack | Cards in box | Box MSRP (tax incl.) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard expansion (e.g. Storm Emeralda) | 30 | 5 | 150 | ¥6,000 (about $38) |
| Standard, sets before May 2026 (e.g. Mega Symphonia) | 30 | 5 | 150 | ¥5,400 (about $34) |
| Pokemon Card 151 | 20 | 7 | 140 | ¥5,800 (about $37) |
| 30th Celebration | 20 | 6 | 120 | ¥7,200 (about $46) |
| High Class pack box | 10 | 10 | 100 | ¥5,500 (about $35) |

The 30th Celebration pack costs ¥360, 20 packs make ¥7,200, and one card in each pack is a basic Energy (Folio), so a box has 100 non-Energy cards. The 151 pack costs ¥290; 20 packs make ¥5,800.

Dollar figures use ¥157 to the dollar, October 2026. They are Japanese list prices, not what a US buyer pays. See [are Pokemon cards cheaper in Japan](/pokemon/buying/are-pokemon-cards-cheaper-in-japan/) for landed cost.

## Has it always been 30 packs?

No. Standard boxes held 20 packs from the Black Collection and White Collection sets (December 2010) through the XY sets, and 30 packs since Collection Sun and Collection Moon on 9 December 2016, according to Folio.

The pack price rose from ¥180 to ¥200 on sets released from May 2026. The pack count stayed the same, so a box went from ¥5,400 to ¥6,000.

## How many packs are in a Japanese case?

Folio says a Japanese carton holds **12 standard boxes** or 20 High Class boxes. That is a hobby guide, not a Pokemon Company spec, and sellers sometimes break cartons or add promo items. Ask the seller to confirm the box count before paying for a sealed carton.

## Is the pack name a reliable clue?

No. The name 拡張パック (expansion pack) appears on boxes of 30, 20 and even 4 packs, per Folio. Always read the pack count on the listing or the box.

**Does a box guarantee a rare card?:** Not any more. Some 2020 and 2021 product pages promised at least one SR or better per 30-pack box. Later pages for Eevee Heroes, 151 and Storm Emeralda make no such promise. The Pokemon Company does not publish pull rates, so any rate you read is a community estimate.

## How does it compare to an English box?

An English booster box has 36 packs of 10 cards, 360 cards in all (Tokyo Card Report), against 150 in a standard Japanese box. Packs are not directly comparable: Japanese packs cost about $1.27 and English packs about $4.49 at Pokemon Center.

The Japanese box is cheaper in cash, but you get fewer cards and a different rarity ladder. [Japanese vs English Pokemon cards](/pokemon/buying/japanese-vs-english-pokemon-cards/) covers the full comparison.
