## Summary

Pokemon cards are cheaper in Japan at retail price: a Storm Emeralda booster box lists for ¥6,000 (about $38) against a $95.65 TCGplayer market price in the US as of October 2026. But retail stock is sold by lottery, Japanese shops charge ¥11,800 ($75) for the same box, and delivery adds a proxy fee, ¥5,300 EMS postage and a 12.5% US duty with no $800 exemption. One box delivered costs about $124. Savings are real only on some singles and on bundled orders.

## Key facts

- Storm Emeralda box: ¥6,000 ($38) MSRP vs $95.65 US (TCGplayer, 24 Oct 2026)
- One box delivered: about $124 via a proxy, vs $95.65 in the US
- US duty on cards: 12.5% since 24 Jul 2026, no $800 exemption
- EMS 1 kg to the US: ¥5,300 ($34); ¥7,400 from 1 Feb 2027

**Are Pokemon cards cheaper in Japan?** At the shelf, yes: a Storm Emeralda booster box retails for **¥6,000 (about $38)** in Japan against a $95.65 TCGplayer market price in the US as of October 2026. Two things eat that gap. Japanese shops sell the same box for ¥11,800 ($75) because retail stock is rationed, and once you add a proxy fee, EMS postage and the 12.5% US duty, one box lands at about $124. The real savings are on specific singles and on bundled orders.

Yen prices below are converted at ¥158 to the dollar, the Federal Reserve H.10 rate for 16 October 2026. US prices are TCGplayer market prices on 24 October 2026; Japanese shop prices were read on 25 October 2026.

## How much do Japanese Pokemon cards cost in Japan?

Japan has two prices for every sealed product: the suggested retail price (希望小売価格) set by The Pokemon Company, and what a card shop or marketplace actually charges. Current sets retail at ¥180 to ¥360 a pack, so a box is ¥5,400 to ¥7,200.

The catch is getting it. Pokemon Center Online sold the Storm Emeralda box and the 30th Celebration box by lottery, with application windows of a few days, according to the Japanese hobby sites SNKRDUNK and Gamepedia. Boxes that miss the lottery are bought from shops at a markup, and that markup is the Japanese "market price".

Sample: one sealed booster box of each set. Retail prices from pokemon-card.com and PokeGuardian; Japanese market prices from Cardrush (shop list price, 25 October 2026) and SNKRDUNK (lowest ask, 30 September 2026, via Samurai Sword Tokyo); US prices are TCGplayer market prices on 24 October 2026.

| Box | Japan retail (MSRP) | Japan market | US (TCGplayer market) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Storm Emeralda (ストームエメラルダ, M6), 30 packs, released 31 July 2026 | ¥6,000 ($38) | ¥11,800 ($75), Cardrush | $95.65 (lowest listing $92.00) |
| 30th Celebration (30th CELEBRATION, M6a), 20 packs of 6 foil cards, released 16 September 2026 | ¥7,200 ($46) | ¥24,500 ($155) lowest SNKRDUNK ask; ¥26,449 ($167) Samurai Sword Tokyo listing, 23 October | $210.20 (lowest listing $200.00) |
| Mega Symphonia (メガシンフォニア, M1S), 30 packs, released 1 August 2025 | ¥5,400 ($34) | ¥8,980 ($57), Cardrush | $82.98 (lowest listing $73.01) |

The pattern is the same for all three: the US market price is about 1.3 to 1.5 times the Japanese shop price, and 2.4 to 4.6 times the retail price. The shop price is the one you can actually pay from abroad, through a proxy, since Cardrush and Yuyu-tei ship only within Japan.

## Are Japanese singles cheaper in Japan than in the US?

Not reliably. Japanese shops price chase cards close to what the same card fetches in the US, and for some cards Japan is the expensive side. The English print is sometimes far more expensive than the Japanese one, and sometimes far cheaper.

Sample: four Special Art Rare (SAR) singles that exist in both languages, raw, near mint. Japanese prices are Cardrush and Yuyu-tei shop list prices on 25 October 2026; US prices are TCGplayer market prices on 24 October 2026.

| Card | Japan shop price | Japanese card in the US | English version in the US |
|---|---|---|---|
| Umbreon ex SAR (ブラッキーex) 217/187, Terastal Festival ex (sv8a) | ¥54,800 ($347) Cardrush; ¥59,800 ($378) Yuyu-tei | $399.20 | $1,205.47 (Prismatic Evolutions 161/131) |
| Charizard ex SAR (リザードンex) 201/165, Pokemon Card 151 (sv2a) | ¥59,800 ($378) at both shops | $388.35 | $295.70 (Scarlet & Violet 151, 199/165) |
| Charizard ex SAR 134/108, Ruler of the Black Flame (sv3) | ¥42,800 ($271) Cardrush; ¥39,800 ($252) Yuyu-tei | $175.07 | $87.12 (Obsidian Flames 223/197) |
| Mew ex SAR (ミュウex) 205/165, Pokemon Card 151 (sv2a) | ¥37,800 ($239) Cardrush; ¥39,800 ($252) Yuyu-tei | $208.14 | $24.51 (Scarlet & Violet 151, 205/165) |

Umbreon is the case people have in mind when they ask whether Japanese cards are cheaper: the Japanese SAR is a third of the price of the English card, and a Tokyo shop undercuts the US price of the Japanese card by about $50. The lowest ask on the SNKRDUNK marketplace was lower still at ¥42,000 ($266) on 7 October 2026 (reported by Samurai Sword Tokyo).

The Charizard from 151 is the opposite: Japanese shops want ¥59,800 ($378), about the US price for the Japanese card, and the English print is cheaper than either. Charizard from Ruler of the Black Flame and Mew ex from 151 are both cheaper in the US than in Japan before you pay a cent of shipping. Japanese demand sets the Japanese price.

## What does it cost to get a box from Japan to the US?

Four costs sit between a Japanese price and your door: a proxy fee, international shipping, US duty, and the cost of paying in yen. As of October 2026 they look like this.

**Proxy fee.** If you buy through a proxy service, Buyee charges ¥500 ($3.16) per order on its Standard and Insured Delivery plans and ¥300 on the Inspection-only plan (Buyee plans page, 25 October 2026). Shops that ship overseas themselves have no proxy fee; their own shipping charge applies instead. For the proxy comparison see [Buyee vs ZenMarket for Pokemon cards](/pokemon/shipping/buyee-vs-zenmarket-pokemon-cards/).

**International shipping.** A booster box in a padded carton weighs about 1 kg. The options for a US address, with the quote date:

| Service, 1 kg to the US | Price | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| Japan Post EMS, published rate (Zone 4) | ¥5,300 ($33.54); 500 g ¥3,900 ($24.68); 2 kg ¥7,900 ($50.00) | Japan Post rate schedule, 25 October 2026 |
| Japan Post EMS, from 1 February 2027 | ¥7,400 ($46.84); 2 kg ¥10,300 ($65.19) | Japan Post fee revision notice |
| EMS with duty prepaid (DDP) through a proxy | $37.63 | OneMall checkout quote, 12 October 2026 |
| DHL Express through a proxy | $38.19 | OneMall checkout quote, 12 October 2026 |
| DHL Express Worldwide, published list rate (zone 5, non-document) | ¥22,160 ($140) before fuel surcharge | DHL Japan rate guide, valid from 1 January 2026 |

Proxies ship DHL on account rates that are a fraction of DHL's published list price, so the list rate is only a warning against booking a courier yourself. Japan Post's cheaper options are gone for now: a proxy reported on 12 October 2026 that regular EMS, airmail and sea mail were not offered for US addresses, only EMS with duties prepaid, for parcels declared at $2,500 or less.

**Paying in yen.** PayPal adds 4.00% above its base exchange rate when you pay for goods listed in another currency (PayPal US fee page, 25 October 2026). A card's foreign transaction fee typically runs 1% to 3% (Chime, read 25 October 2026); a card with no foreign transaction fee removes this line entirely.

## Do you pay customs duty on Pokemon cards from Japan?

Yes, 12.5% of the value, on every parcel. Two rules changed in 2025 and 2026, and both work against small orders.

The $800 duty-free allowance (de minimis) is suspended. CBP's interim final rule of 24 June 2026 suspends it indefinitely for mail imports valued at $800 or less, effective 24 July 2026 (91 FR 37801). Japan Post stopped accepting US-bound goods worth over $100 on 27 August 2025 and resumed all US mail on 14 April 2026, but only at designated post offices and only with the US duty prepaid through Zonos, the one CBP-certified provider it recommends. The parcel carries a DDP label with a 13-digit declaration ID, and Zonos charges a usage fee that Japan Post does not quantify.

The rate is 12.5%. Pokemon cards are classified as playing cards under HTS 9504.40, where the normal (MFN) duty is free (USITC tariff schedule; CBP ruling N352819 of 11 September 2025). From 24 July 2026 the US Trade Representative's Section 301 action sets the duty on products of Japan so that "the sum of the MFN tariff and the Section 301 tariff shall be 12.5 percent" (Federal Register notice of 28 July 2026, 91 FR 47318). Free plus 12.5% is 12.5%. Fuji Card Shop, a Japanese retailer that prepays US duty at checkout, charges exactly that on card orders.

**What we could not check:** The Section 301 notice exempts the goods listed in its Annex II, but the annex is published as page images, so we could not search it for 9504.40. No trade-law summary we read names toys, games or playing cards among the exemptions, and retailers that prepay duty charge 12.5% on cards. Treat 12.5% as the working rate and expect your proxy or seller to confirm it at checkout. The earlier rate quoted in CBP's September 2025 ruling, an extra 15% on products of Japan, no longer applies.

## What does one box really cost delivered?

Sample: one sealed Storm Emeralda box bought from Cardrush through Buyee's Standard plan, 1 kg, shipped by Japan Post EMS at the published rate, duty at 12.5% of the item price, paid with a card that charges 3% on yen. Shop-to-warehouse domestic postage and the Zonos usage fee are left out because neither amount is published, so the real total is a little higher.

| Line | Amount |
|---|---|
| Box at Cardrush, ¥11,800 | $74.68 |
| Buyee fee, ¥500 | $3.16 |
| EMS 1 kg, ¥5,300 | $33.54 |
| US duty, 12.5% of $74.68 | $9.34 |
| Card foreign transaction fee, 3% of $111.38 | $3.34 |
| **Delivered** | **$124.06** |
| TCGplayer market price, US seller | $95.65 (lowest listing $92.00) |

Buying one box from Japan costs about $28 more than buying it in the US. Two boxes in a 2 kg parcel (EMS ¥7,900) come to $227.27 against $191.30 on TCGplayer, still $36 more, because the duty scales with the price and only the proxy fee is fixed.

The 30th Celebration box tells the same story at a higher price. At the lowest SNKRDUNK ask of ¥24,500 ($155.06) plus the same fees and duty, it lands at $216.89, within $7 of the $210.20 US market price. A US seller has already paid the Japanese market price, the shipping and the duty, and the US price reflects it.

## Where the saving is real, and where it isn't

Best for buying from Japan:

- **Cards that Americans want more than Japanese collectors do.** Umbreon ex SAR at the SNKRDUNK low ask of ¥42,000 lands at about $336 after fees and duty (500 g EMS), against $399.20 for the same card from a US seller and $1,205.47 for the English version. At Cardrush's ¥54,800 the delivered cost rises to about $429 and the saving is gone, so the saving lives in the sourcing, not in the country.
- **Several singles in one parcel.** Ten sleeved cards still weigh well under 500 g, so they ship for the same ¥3,900 as one, and the ¥500 proxy fee covers the whole order, so fixed costs fall to a dollar or two per card while the 12.5% duty stays the same wherever you buy.
- **Cards and products with no English version**, where the comparison is only Japan vs a US importer. The duty and shipping are the same for both, so a Japanese shop usually wins once you buy more than one item.

Best for buying in the US:

- **A single sealed box.** Every box we priced costs more delivered from Japan than from a US seller on TCGplayer, by $7 to $36.
- **Cards Japanese collectors chase.** Charizard ex SAR from 151, Charizard ex SAR from Ruler of the Black Flame and Mew ex SAR from 151 are all cheaper from a US seller, and their English prints are cheaper again.
- **Anything you need by a date.** A proxy's EMS DDP quote on 12 October 2026 listed 10 to 12 days in transit (OneMall), before the proxy's own handling time.

## Reading this outside the US?

The Japanese prices and the Japanese shipping rates are the same for you; the duty line is different. In the UK, VAT is charged on all goods sent from abroad except gifts worth £39 or less, and for parcels worth more than £135 you pay the VAT and any customs duty to Royal Mail, Parcelforce or the courier before delivery (GOV.UK). In Australia, GST applies to most retail sales of low-value goods imported by consumers, with the A$1,000 threshold measured on the customs value excluding transport and insurance (business.gov.au). Readers in the EU should check their national customs site for import VAT. Wherever you are, add your country's tax to the delivered-cost table above and compare against your local market, not TCGplayer.
